Marcos Government Initiates Legal Steps to Repatriate Fugitive Ex-Lawmaker Zaldy Co

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced on Monday that the government is taking legal steps to repatriate fugitive former lawmaker Zaldy Co, who is currently in custody in the Czech Republic. Marcos stated that the Department of Justice and the Department of Foreign Affairs have been directed to lead discussions with Czech authorities to facilitate Co's return to the Philippines.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos, in a video message, emphasized the importance of adhering to established legal procedures between countries for Co's repatriation. He mentioned that a high-level coordination team would be deployed to oversee the process, ensuring that all necessary steps are undertaken properly. Marcos assured the public that upon his return, Co would face the charges against him, emphasizing the government's commitment to legal accountability.

Zaldy Co is among 16 individuals charged with graft and malversation related to a PHP289-million flood control project in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, managed by Sunwest Corporation, a company owned by his family. The Anti-Money Laundering Council accused Co of receiving PHP802 million through check deposits from Sunwest accounts during his time as a lawmaker, a direct violation of the prohibition against public officials holding business interests.

The Sandiganbayan has declared Co a fugitive from justice, following his arrest and transfer to Czech custody while attempting to enter Germany. Marcos reiterated the government's resolve to bring Co back to the Philippines to face the legal process and answer to the Filipino people.
