Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged his support to Timor-Leste, the newest member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with the aim of fortifying the regional bloc. Marcos made this commitment during the 13th ASEAN Law Ministers Meeting (ALAWMM) held at the Manila Grand Hyatt in Taguig City, emphasizing the Philippines' dedication to fostering a unified ASEAN community grounded in fairness, mutual trust, and the rule of law.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to collaborating with all ASEAN member states to build a more robust and resilient regional bloc. He expressed readiness to extend support to Timor-Leste as it prepares to integrate into ASEAN's legal bodies. Marcos stressed the significance of active engagement by every member state, appreciating each voice within the bloc.

This meeting marks Timor-Leste's inaugural participation in the ALAWMM since its full membership in ASEAN. Established in 1986, ALAWMM serves as a key forum for dialogue and cooperation among justice ministers, attorneys general, and secretaries of justice from ASEAN member states. Convened biennially, the meeting plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and launching initiatives aimed at enhancing the region's capacity for crime prevention and criminal justice, as well as exploring the harmonization of ASEAN trade laws.
