Bohol: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced that the government is intensifying preparations against the potential threat of a severe El Ni±o phenomenon that could persist until next year. During the inauguration of the Mabini-Cayacay Small Reservoir Irrigation Project in Bohol, he highlighted government estimates indicating a high probability of prolonged dry conditions affecting parts of the Philippines.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stated that the administration has been investing in small reservoir irrigation projects (SRIPs) and other water-management initiatives to mitigate farmers' vulnerability to drought. These efforts are intended to increase farmers' income and strengthen resilience against natural disasters.

Farmers in drought-prone areas are being advised to temporarily shift to crops that require less water, such as watermelon, ginger, purple yam, peanuts, and eggplant. The government is also promoting climate-adaptive farming technologies, including solar-powered pumps and water reuse systems, in areas frequently affected by drought.

Marcos emphasized that information campaigns are being conducted to encourage the proper maintenance and protection of irrigation facilities. The PHP833.37-million Mabini-Cayacay Small Reservoir Irrigation Project, a project of the National Irrigation Administration, is expected to provide a reliable year-round water supply to 530 hectares of agricultural land in Bohol, directly benefiting 717 farmers in the municipalities of Mabini and Alicia.
