Marcos Urges Filipinos to Reclaim Maritime Heritage and Safeguard Future

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged Filipinos to 'rediscover and reclaim' the nation's maritime identity, emphasizing that the protection of the seas is vital not only for sovereignty but also for the survival and legacy of future generations.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos highlighted the importance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) 2025 as a call to embrace the Philippines' seafaring heritage. In his message, Marcos encouraged unity among Filipinos in caring for the country's seas and shores, underlining that this effort is crucial to safeguarding national sovereignty and the legacy passed down to future generations.

Marcos elaborated on the Philippines' historical connection to the sea, noting that it has been a source of both prosperity and conflict. He described the sea as a central element in the nation's history, shaping each century with its challenges and opportunities.

The President stressed the importance of effective maritime governance, which he stated is essential for resource management, community safety, and maintaining national sovereignty. He called for aligning scientific and legal approaches, fostering a sense of stewardship within communities, and encouraging leaders to govern with a long-term vision.

This appeal comes amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where increased activity by Chinese vessels within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone has raised concerns. In response, Manila has issued multiple protests against China's actions and lawmakers have suggested that President Marcos address the issue at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, referencing the 2016 arbitral ruling that favored the Philippines.
