Manila: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to work closely with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) to emphasize the protection of civil liberties and the safeguarding of all Filipinos' rights. In a meeting held at Malaca±ang with PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III, President Marcos highlighted the importance of conducting lawful police operations while upholding human rights.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro shared that the President stressed the necessity for the PNP to collaborate with the CHR to ensure the protection of human rights. In a press briefing at the Palace, Castro conveyed the President's message, emphasizing the significance of safeguarding the rights of Filipino citizens.
President Marcos and Gen. Torre also talked about broad police operations and key public safety initiatives. Castro mentioned that their discussion covered various projects, including the implementation of a five-minute response time strategy, Oplan Balik Eskwela 2025-2026, an anti-illegal drug campaign strategy, and training programs for Department of Justice prosecutors and law enforcement agents.
Castro further stated that while the PNP must act swiftly and decisively to ensure public safety, it must do so without infringing on human rights. She reiterated that the authority and power granted to the police should not be abused but should prioritize the upholding of human rights.
New directives currently in place include expanded police visibility in communities, faster police response through the 911 emergency hotline, and reinforced law enforcement presence in schools. Over 37,000 police personnel have been deployed nationwide for the opening of classes, with more than 5,000 police assistance desks set up near campuses.
Gen. Torre also conducted personal inspections at select schools to ensure adequate police coverage. Additionally, the PNP issued warnings to drug dealers and militant groups against targeting students, with Castro quoting Torre's stern warning: 'Huwag nilang subukan (They better not try)'.
