Marcos Warns Against Social Impact of Online Gambling on Filipino Families

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Sunday issued a stern warning about the increasing social impact of online gambling, emphasizing the need for digital tools to be used for the betterment of Filipino families rather than their detriment. In his recent video blog, the President acknowledged the advantages of digitalization in enhancing public services but expressed concern over the misuse of technology for activities such as scams, misinformation, and gambling.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President specifically pointed out how digitalization has facilitated easier access to gambling, which has had a destructive impact on many families, particularly when used irresponsibly. He stated, "Ang isa pang pinapadali ng digitalization ay ang pagsusugal. Maraming pamilya ang nasisira dito lalo na kung hindi responsable ang pagkakagamit nito."

The President's comments come as lawmakers and civil society groups increasingly call for a complete ban on online gambling operations. While acknowledging the potential of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and digital platforms to improve government services, President Marcos urged Filipinos to remain cautious about the misuse of digital tools.

"Ang teknolohiya ay naririto para padaliin ang ating buhay... para magtaguyod ng pamilyang Pilipino. Hindi para sirain tayo nito," he said, underscoring that the purpose of technology is to simplify life and strengthen Filipino families, not to harm them.

The current administration has been proactive in expanding public Wi-Fi, fiber internet infrastructure, and digital education platforms. However, President Marcos stressed that technological advancement should be accompanied by appropriate regulation and responsible usage.

Earlier, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin mentioned that the Palace is still examining the wider consequences of implementing a total ban on all forms of online gambling.
