Marcos Weighs Extending Tenure of PNP Chief Marbil Amid Election Concerns

Taguig City: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has signaled the possibility of extending the tenure of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, emphasizing the need for stability during the forthcoming 2025 midterm elections.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a media interview held in Taguig City, President Marcos highlighted the crucial role of leadership continuity, particularly during the election period. He stated, "Well, there is a very strong argument that it would be, it would not be good for stability especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and approaching an election period."

President Marcos further elaborated on the government's considerations, stating that the option to retain Gen. Marbil as PNP Chief is under serious evaluation. "So, pinag-aaralan namin (we are studying that), but I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on. At the very least, until after the elections," he remarked.

Gen. Rommel Marbil assumed the role of PNP Chief on April 1, 2024, and is slated for retirement on February 7, 2025, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56. The administration's deliberations on extending his service are seen as a move to ensure stability during the critical election period.
