Batanes: The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has joined forces with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the local government of Batanes to bolster maritime safety and awareness across the province. In a concerted effort to address the unique maritime challenges of the region, these organizations have set a collaborative framework in motion.
According to Philippines News Agency, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on March 12, aiming to enhance safety initiatives, regulatory enforcement, and educational campaigns in Batanes. "With its challenging seascape and unpredictable weather, Batanes presents unique risks for maritime travel. MARINA, the provincial government, and the PCG reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of all maritime stakeholders through sustained education, enforcement, and collaboration," MARINA stated.
The MOU signing was spearheaded by MARINA Regional Office I and II Director Jedini Nur Sibal, Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco, municipal mayors, and representatives from PCG-Batanes. Governor Cayco emphasized the critical role of sea travel in Batanes' daily life and economy, stating, "Every journey across the province's waters carries a great responsibility, underscoring the need to ensure that all boats, vessels, and crew members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to navigate safely."
Director Sibal highlighted that maritime safety "goes beyond mere compliance with regulations," focusing on preserving lives, strengthening communities, and fostering a culture of safety. To support these objectives, MARINA launched the third leg of its Maritime Safety Awareness Campaign Caravan. This initiative provided interactive training sessions and information drives on navigational safety, weather preparedness, and passengers' rights, equipping seafarers and fisherfolk with essential knowledge to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies.
PCG-Batanes also stressed the importance of strict adherence to maritime regulations, urging boat operators to prioritize safety measures such as wearing life jackets and ensuring vessel seaworthiness.
