Masbate Implements Measures as Typhoon Inday Nears

Masbate: Masbate's provincial government has implemented precautionary measures to safeguard the lives, safety, and well-being of its residents as Typhoon Inday approaches and the southwest monsoon, known locally as 'habagat', continues to affect the weather in the island province.

According to Philippines News Agency, Masbate Governor Richard Kho issued a directive on Wednesday for immediate pre-emptive and, when necessary, forced evacuations of residents living in low-lying, coastal, and other high-risk areas. These actions are based on assessments by their respective local government units.

Additionally, Governor Kho has suspended sea travel, particularly for all small sea vessels and watercraft, in the waters surrounding Masbate. He also granted school heads and principals the authority to declare class suspensions when conditions in their areas necessitate such actions, in coordination with local chief executives.

Governor Kho urged every Masbate±o to remain vigilant, stay informed through official government advisories, and cooperate with local authorities and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils. He emphasized that readiness and collaboration are crucial for saving lives and strengthening communities during adverse weather conditions.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported in its weather bulletin that Typhoon Inday has maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gusts of up to 215 kph. As of 4 a.m., Inday was located 925 km east of northern Luzon, moving west-northwest at 20 kph.

For the Bicol region, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been hoisted in the northern and central portions of Catanduanes, including Pandan, Caramoran, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Baras, and San Miguel. Strong winds are expected to persist in these areas. PAGASA also indicated that most of the country would experience strong to gale-force gusts due to the habagat and the periphery of Inday.
