Ofunato: The massive wildfire that erupted in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, on February 26 has been contained, city officials announced Sunday. As a result, evacuation orders were lifted for 882 residents from 361 households across four districts.
According to Philippines News Agency, 2,424 people from 979 households remain under evacuation, with officials expecting to lift all remaining orders by noon on Monday. "We now see no danger of the fire spreading further," Ofunato Mayor Kiyoshi Fuchigami stated at a press conference on Sunday.
Firefighters will continue to work to determine whether the fire has been extinguished. The wildfire, which started around 1 p.m. on February 26, scorched approximately 2,900 hectares-about 9 percent of the city. It damaged 210 structures, including 102 homes, 76 of which were completely destroyed. A 90-year-old resident was found dead during the blaze.
