Iloilo city: A learning and research hub aimed at empowering communities and encouraging youth to join the energy sector was inaugurated in Iloilo City by Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), in collaboration with the Meralco Power Academy (MPA).
According to Philippines News Agency, the center is the first MPA facility outside Meralco's franchise area and is located within the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) facility. MGEN stated in a press release that the center underscores the company's commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development through continuous learning and skills development.
MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel Rubio expressed that the facility, formerly known as the GBP Institute for Energy, has been reimagined to meet evolving industry and community needs. The Meralco Power Academy (MCI) aims to become a leading hub for energy education, research, and innovation, with plans to establish additional centers for innovation across the Philippines.
Previously serving as a training center for MGEN employees, the facility now aims to strengthen regional capabilities in energy innovation, foster technical excellence, and inspire the next generation of energy talents. During its launch, the center hosted the Young Engineers and Scientists Summit (YESS), attended by students from Angelicum School, Leganes National High School, and Philippine Science High School - Iloilo.
In response to queries from the Philippine News Agency, MGEN revealed plans to open more centers of innovation nationwide, including one at its MTerra Solar project in Nueva Ecija. The groundbreaking of this project, noted as the world's largest integrated solar and battery storage facility, took place on November 21, 2024, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in attendance.
