MILF Commander Assassinated Following Recent Peace Accord

Rajah buayan: Police are pursuing armed men who shot dead a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander Monday in Rajah Buayan, Maguindanao del Sur, just 11 days after he signed a peace agreement ending years of rido (family feud) with another MILF leader. Capt. Argie Eyana, Rajah Buayan municipal police chief, identified the victim as Muntok Utap, head of the MILF's 106th Base Command.

According to Philippines News Agency, initial police reports indicate Utap was ambushed while inside a vehicle by unidentified assailants along the highway near Dansalan Elementary School in Barangay Panadtaban, Rajah Buayan, around 8 a.m. 'A stray bullet also hit a woman, who is now undergoing treatment in an undisclosed hospital,' Eyana told Church-run Radio DXMS.

Utap was a key figure in a rido settlement facilitated by the Army's 601st Infantry Brigade on July 10. He and Barangay Panadtaban Chairman Norudin Utto settled their "misunderstanding" in front of political leaders and military officials, led by Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the Army's 601st Brigade.

Eyana said the motive and identity of the attackers are still being verified.
