Minor Phreatomagmatic Eruption Occurs at Taal Volcano

Accra:Manila A two-minute minor phreatomagmatic eruption was recorded at Taal Volcano's main crater on Wednesday, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). This volcanic activity resulted in a plume reaching 250 meters above the crater, and the alert level remains at Alert 1, indicating low-level unrest.

According to Philippines News agency, Phivolcs also documented a one-minute minor phreatic eruption at the volcano within the past 24 hours. Additionally, at least two volcanic earthquakes were recorded during this period, one of which occurred at 1233 a.m. on October 20.

Phreatomagmatic eruptions occur when magma interacts with water. Furthermore, Phivolcs recorded an average of 1,002 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions on Tuesday. The agency previously stated that Taal Volcano's small eruptions, which have been occurring several times a day since 2021, are considered normal behavior.
