MMDA and PNOC Join Forces to Introduce Solar Power at Key Project Sites

Manila: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has entered into a partnership with the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) to implement solar energy solutions at two of its project sites. This strategic move is part of an effort to enhance energy resilience and sustainability within the public sector.

According to Philippines News Agency, the agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony where MMDA Chairman Don Artes emphasized that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with PNOC aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s commitment to sustainable energy. Artes stated, "Together, we are embarking on projects that represent our shared vision for a cleaner and more energy-efficient future."

As outlined in the MOU, the PNOC will facilitate the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at two locations: a ground-mounted solar PV system at the MMDA Carmona Development in Cavite and a roof-mounted PV system at the MMDA Annex Building in Pasig City. The Carmona Development, previously a sanitary landfill, has been repurposed into a hub for training, disaster response, and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, the MMDA head office in Pasig City is recognized as a Building Ecological Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE)-certified facility. The MMDA is aiming for a BERDE 3-star rating for the Annex Building to further demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.

PNOC President and CEO Oliver Butalid highlighted the importance of the partnership in advocating for renewable energy and promoting energy self-sufficiency within the government. The signing ceremony was attended by key figures including MMDA Deputy Chairman Frisco San Juan Jr., MMDA General Manager Procopio Lipana, and other executives from both the MMDA and PNOC.
