Manila: Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro announced plans to enhance security measures in both public and private schools across the city in response to recent violent incidents on school campuses nationwide. The city will deploy more police and Office of Public Safety and Security (OPSS) personnel, alongside providing metal detectors to ensure the safety of students and staff.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Teodoro made these assurances after welcoming 70 newly hired OPSS personnel to bolster public safety efforts in Marikina. She emphasized the importance of having roving police officers in private schools, working in coordination with the Marikina Private Schools Association Inc., as part of the city's comprehensive strategy to improve security.
Mayor Teodoro highlighted that these additional measures aim to enhance school security and provide peace of mind to students, parents, teachers, and school communities. She stated, "It is our duty and responsibility to ensure learners not only receive good education, but are, most importantly, safe in the confines of their schools." Marikina City hosts 17 elementary public schools, 16 public high schools, and several private institutions, all of which are prioritized as safe havens for children.
In her commitment to school safety, Teodoro personally inspected security arrangements at several large public schools to identify further enhancements. She assured the public that security personnel had been present even before reports of violence emerged elsewhere in the country, stating, "Bago pa man ang mga balitang lumabas tungkol sa mga insidente sa ibang bahagi ng bansa, may nakatalaga na tayong mga pulis at OPSS sa ating mga paaralan."
