Motor Tanker Grounds Near Siargao Without Causing Oil Spill

Siargao: A motor tanker flagged under the Philippines has run aground off the coast of Burgos town on Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, with no oil spill reported. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the incident, stating that the vessel, identified as MT Cheng Xian Feng 168, was grounded without any immediate environmental hazards.

According to Philippines News Agency, the incident was reported by the Burgos local government through its Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Sunday morning. This prompted the swift deployment of PCG personnel to assess the situation and take necessary actions.

PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab stated that a technical assessment and verification are currently underway. This includes checking for any possible hull breach to ensure the protection of the marine environment. Authorities also confirmed the safety of the nine Filipino crew members aboard the tanker. All crew members have been brought ashore for assistance and investigation and were found to be in good physical condition.

Initial investigation revealed that the 712 gross tonnage vessel was en route from Cagayan de Oro City to Homonhon, Leyte, when it encountered sudden engine trouble at around 1 p.m. on Saturday. Despite the captain's order to anchor, strong currents and heavy waves caused the vessel to drift and eventually run aground.
