Ilocos Norte: The municipal government of Piddig in Ilocos Norte province has restricted visitors to Mount Lammin to prevent grass fires. In a social media post, Piddig town mayor Georgina Guillen stated that the temporary closure is a "preventive measure" against potential grassfires that may damage Mount Lammin, a popular destination due to its relatively cold weather and the largest coffee plantation in the Ilocos Region.
According to Philippines News Agency, Piddig is one of the municipalities in the province with a history of grass fire incidents, prompting the local government to take early action this month to safeguard natural resources, wildlife, and community welfare. The establishment of a concrete road leading to a pilot national convergence program for coffee plantation has increased the area's popularity, attracting visitors, including young adventurers who enjoy selfies and group activities, as well as overnight camping.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has acknowledged its limitations in combating forest fires, leading local government units to adopt proactive measures. Last year, Piddig's government enlisted village officials to monitor visitor entry and set up checkpoints at strategic locations, including Barangay 22, Boyboy Junction national road along the Piddig-Carasi-Solsona highway, and Barangay 18 Estancia near the Sitio Utoy and Guisit boundary in Barangay Maruaya-Calambeg.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the BFP assist in manning these checkpoints. Evangeline Barba, a concerned netizen, supported the temporary closure, stating, "This is a good move not only for fire prevention but also cleanliness preservation."
