Manila: The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has taken decisive action by directing its Inspection, Monitoring and Investigation Service (IMIS) to initiate a motu proprio investigation into the alleged involvement of several police officers in the disappearance of more than 100 "sabungeros" (cockfighting enthusiasts).
According to Philippines News Agency, Napolcom vice chair and executive officer, lawyer Rafael Vicente Calinisan, emphasized their commitment to holding accountable any police personnel found to be complicit with the group purportedly responsible for killing the victims and disposing of their bodies in Taal Lake, Batangas. Calinisan urged complainants to file formal complaints with Napolcom to expedite case resolution, in collaboration with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG).
Calinisan appealed to "Alyas Totoy" to submit a complaint affidavit to Napolcom, stressing the need for swift justice. He clarified that any case filed with Napolcom would be administrative, focusing on the fitness of the implicated policemen to remain in service. Possible penalties for those found liable include suspension, demotion, or dismissal.
Earlier in the week, "Totoy" implicated certain police officers, a security guard from a Manila cockfighting arena, and a showbiz personality as being connected to the crime's mastermind.
