Iloilo: The K9 dogs trained for narcotics detection will boost the anti-drug campaign in Iloilo, Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) spokesperson Lt. Col. Arnel Solis said Friday. In an interview, Solis stated that the drug-detecting dogs will be deployed in ports of entry and exit across the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, the K9 dogs have a powerful sense of smell, which surpasses the limited sense of humans. Through their ability to sniff, these dogs can detect the presence of illegal drugs. At least 22 canines and their handlers are set to complete the 180-day Narcotics Detection Dog and Handlers Course on July 6. The handlers, who are personnel of the IPPO, also underwent comprehensive instruction in narcotics detection, canine handling, and veterinary care.

Solis mentioned that 26 dogs initially entered the course, with 17 having already passed the evaluation, four failing, and the rest still under assessment. The dogs that did not meet the program's standards will not qualify to be part of the K9 team. Solis emphasized that while the training enhances the dogs' existing skills and abilities, their qualification is innate. Those who pass will be certified by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and will be granted authority.

The provincial government has allocated PHP3.8 million for the program.
