Quezon city: Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. took command of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday in a surprise ceremony at Camp Crame, presided over by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez replaced Gen. Nicolas Torre III, who acknowledged his relief through a message to Remulla but was absent from the ceremony. This change of leadership was directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., as announced in an order signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, citing a need to uphold the authority of the National Police Commission (Napolcom).
Remulla emphasized the decision's alignment with national security interests, noting the President's commitment to ensuring the PNP operates within legal frameworks. The move follows Torre's previous disregard for a Napolcom resolution reversing his reassignment of PNP officials, including Nartatez. Napolcom had issued its own personnel revamp, affecting several senior officers.
Despite being relieved, Torre was neither charged with any administrative or criminal case. Remulla mentioned that Torre, a four-star general, might retire early or transition to another government position, with discussions about utilizing his extensive experience in other roles.
Nartatez, now the 32nd Chief PNP, assured continuity of effective programs and emphasized proactive crime prevention. He aims to enhance community security, ensuring citizens can safely navigate public spaces. Before his current role, Nartatez held various key positions, which reinforced his reputation as a potential PNP chief.
The PNP expressed its readiness to support Nartatez's leadership, ensuring the continuity of service and appealing to the public to avoid speculation. The organization reiterated its dedication to professionalism, integrity, and accountability amidst this leadership transition.
