Zamboanga city: Classes in all levels, both in public and private schools in the city, were suspended on Tuesday due to inclement weather. Mayor Khymer Olaso issued the order as the state weather bureau stated in an advisory that Zamboanga City will experience cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms due to the low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon (habagat).
According to Philippines News Agency, Olaso advised the public, particularly those in low-lying and coastal areas, as well as in riverbanks, to take precautionary measures. "Let us be vigilant in our respective communities. Evacuate to safer areas if needed," Olaso said in a statement.
Elmeir Jade Apolinario, chief of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, stated that their operations center is closely monitoring the situation in all barangays and is ready to deploy response teams in cases of emergencies. On Monday, about 407 families were displaced after heavy rains caused flooding in four areas in Barangay Tumaga.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office promptly distributed relief goods with the assistance of the Tumaga Barangay Council and volunteers. Olaso mentioned that the city government is looking into all possible measures that may address the long-standing problem of flooding in the village.
