Butuan city: Acting Philippine National Police chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. welcomed 50 former New People's Army rebels during a visit here Thursday. The former combatants surrendered at various times last year to different police units in the Caraga Region. Nartatez inspected 43 high-powered firearms they turned over.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez was joined by PRO-13 director Brig. Gen. Marcial Mariano Magistrado IV and Agusan del Sur Gov. Santiago Cane Jr. in distributing livelihood packages, financial aid, and food packs to the former rebels. 'The government has provided our former rebels with support such as initial capital for livelihood opportunities,' Nartatez said.
Nartatez also held a conference with Police Regional Office 13 personnel, emphasizing the PNP mission to enforce law, prevent crime and ensure public safety. 'It is not enough that our police are seen in the street. Their presence must be felt by the community through proper conduct during patrols and law enforcement,' the acting PNP chief said.
