National Government Allocates PHP200,000 to Each Barangay for Education and Development

Manila: The national government's Bawat Barangay Makikinabang (BBM) Program is set to provide PHP200,000 to each barangay, with the grant divided equally between supporting college scholars and funding community projects, officials announced Tuesday. National Anti-Poverty Commission Secretary Lope Santos III emphasized that the initiative is aimed at investing in education and community development rather than offering cash handouts.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Santos highlighted during a media forum that the scholarship component is designed to assist approximately 200,000 graduating college students nationwide. This support is expected to help students finish their studies and subsequently enter the labor force. The remaining PHP100,000 allocated for each barangay will fund various projects identified by local officials. These projects may include the acquisition of essential equipment such as laptops, printers, projectors, tents, monoblock chairs, generators, or even barangay service vehicles.

Liga ng mga Barangay-Iloilo President Amalia Victoria Debuque expressed her approval of the program, noting it as a groundbreaking initiative where barangays receive direct financial support from the national government. "This is a good project. This is a big thing for us barangays because, for the first time, we felt seen by the President," Debuque commented.

Under the BBM Program, each barangay has the opportunity to nominate up to five scholars, with each scholar receiving PHP20,000. Debuque noted that vouchers have been prepared for around 90 percent of Iloilo province's 1,721 barangays. The release of checks is aimed for completion before September or October, contingent upon satisfying documentary requirements.

Despite the positive reception, some barangays are facing delays due to unliquidated funds from previous administrations. Debuque assured that her office, along with the governor's office, is ready to assist in resolving these issues. A ceremonial turnover of checks is planned for July 19, 2026, during the Liga Day celebration at the Iloilo Sports Complex, an event anticipated to attract about 15,500 participants from the province.
