KUALA LUMPUR, The National Under-19 football squad ended their 2024 ASEAN Under-19 Championship campaign in fourth place as they lost 5-3 on penalties to Australia after a 1-1 draw at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, Indonesia today. The national team coached by Juan Torres Garrido fell behind in the 28th minute through a Marcus Younis goal before an own goal by Jake Najdovski in the 73rd minute dragged the playoff match into a penalty shootout. After a promising start in Surabaya, Malaysia failed to defend the title after narrowly losing 0-1 to hosts Indonesia in the semi-finals on Saturday. Malaysia had opened the campaign in style when they thrashed Brunei 11-0 on July 19 followed by a big 5-0 win against Singapore last Tuesday and confirmed their status as Group C champions after a 1-1 draw with Thailand on Thursday. For the record, Malaysia emerged winners of the championship in the 2018 and 2022 editions. Source: BERNAMA News Agency
