Manila: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has issued a warning to the public regarding a surge in fraudulent activities, highlighting the risks of fake online stores, phishing messages, and deceptive payment links, particularly during the holiday season.

According to Philippines News Agency, the NBI has observed that scammers are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics, often replicating the logos and branding of reputable retailers to extract personal data or banking credentials from unsuspecting individuals. The bureau emphasized the importance of skepticism, stating, "If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is."

The NBI's advisory includes safety guidelines urging the public to verify the legitimacy of sellers and online marketplaces before making purchases. Individuals are also advised to avoid clicking on suspicious links received via SMS or emaail from unknown sources, and to safeguard sensitive information by never sharing passwords, banking details, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

Furthermore, the NBI encourages those who encounter suspicious activities or fall victim to scams to report incidents immediately. Preserving evidence, such as screenshots of conversations and advertisements, transaction receipts, payment records, and communications from suspects, is also underscored as crucial in aiding investigations.

Victims can file complaints through the NBI Cybercrime Division at their main office or regional branches. Additionally, the public is encouraged to utilize the NBI's online e-complaint portal at nbi.gov.ph or contact the national anti-scam hotline by dialing 1326.
