Ilocos Norte Officials Advocate for Firecracker-Free Holiday Season

Manila: Provincial health and fire officials reminded the public Wednesday to prioritize safety this holiday season by avoiding firecrackers and watching their diet. Dr. Rickson Balalio, Ilocos Norte provincial health officer, appealed for safe celebrations in support of the national "Iwas Paputok" campaign. 'I am appealing to all Ilocanos to be safe this holiday season and if possible, don't use firecrackers. For everybody's safety, we should watch out also on the foods we eat,' Balalio said.

According to Philippines News Agency, Fire Superintendent Roxanne Parado, the provincial fire marshal, echoed the call. 'Safety should be our best gift this holiday season. Let us celebrate wisely. Take care of our hands and be safe,' Parado said.

Officials noted that using banned firecrackers can lead to fines of PHP20,000 to PHP30,000 or imprisonment under Republic Act 7183. Local authorities have designated approved firecracker zones.

The Department of Health in Region 1 recorded 70 fireworks-related injuries in the region during last year's holiday period, with two cases in Ilocos Norte.
