NBI Report on Ateneo Athletes’ Deaths Referred to DOJ

Manila: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has referred its report on the investigation into the deaths of two Ateneo student-basketball players to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Secretary Fredderick Vida announced on Monday. This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to seek justice for the tragic incident that occurred in June.

According to Philippines News Agency, the NBI report is set to be consolidated with an earlier referral submitted to the DOJ by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG). Secretary Vida stated, "Now we are consolidating it and soon we will be coming up with a decision on how to proceed in this case," during a media interview. The report suggests filing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Ateneo men's basketball team head coach Tab Baldwin, six assistant coaches, and a physical therapist.

The incident, which led to the deaths of Rene Baterbonia, 18, and Divine Adili, 21, occurred on June 8 during a teambuilding activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. The NBI additionally recommended filing simple negligence resulting in homicide charges against three resort owners and an athletic director who were associated with the activity.

Earlier, the PNP filed charges for violation of the anti-hazing law and homicide against Baldwin and 11 others. The consolidation of reports and further legal actions by the DOJ signify the seriousness of the case as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
