Manila: The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has deployed officers and vehicles to provide free rides to commuters affected by the transport strike initiated by the group Manibela, which commenced on Monday. This initiative aims to mitigate the inconvenience faced by passengers during the three-day strike.
According to Philippines News Agency, NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo reported in a news release on Sunday that numerous local government units, along with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), have also mobilized resources to assist affected commuters. Around 8,000 personnel, including nearly 2,500 from the Civil Disturbance and Management unit, have been deployed to ensure smooth operations and maintain order.
The MMDA confirmed its collaboration with local government units to preposition vehicles for the libreng sakay (free ride) program. The agency will closely monitor the strike through its command center, which is connected to closed-circuit television cameras across Metro Manila. This strategy is intended to provide timely responses and necessary assistance throughout the duration of the strike.
Deployment of free-ride vehicles will be executed "as needed" to prevent any adverse impact on the earnings of jeepney drivers who are not participating in the strike. The coordinated effort underscores the commitment to alleviate the effects of the strike on daily commuters while balancing the interests of non-participating transport workers.
