NCSC-6 Applauds Bacolod City’s New Senior Citizen Center

Manila: The National Commission of Senior Citizens-Western Visayas (NCSC-6) has praised Bacolod City for its initiative in establishing a one-stop-shop Senior Citizen Center, strategically located behind the Bacolod City Government Center.

According to Philippines News Agency, NCSC-6 Regional Director Ann Rapunzel Ganzon highlighted the significance of the new facility, describing it as a symbol of dignity, care, and respect for the elderly population of the city. Ganzon expressed appreciation towards Mayor Greg Gasataya and the city leadership for their dedication in funding the establishment of the center.

During a previous visit to Bacolod, Mayor Gasataya presented the design of the Senior Citizen Center to Ganzon. The unveiling of the center was witnessed by NCSC-6 staff from Negros Occidental on Monday. Ganzon emphasized that the center is a testament to Bacolod City's commitment to enhancing the welfare of its senior citizens.

The Senior Citizen Center provides free services that include medical checkups, consultations, eye examinations, pharmacy medicines, and dental services. Additionally, it facilitates the processing of senior citizen identification cards, social pensions, and centenarian benefits, along with offering livelihood training opportunities.

Ganzon underscored the critical role of local government units (LGUs) in implementing laws that support senior citizens' welfare. She referenced Republic Act 7876, which mandates that every LGU must have its own senior citizens center under the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Out of the 153 LGUs under the jurisdiction of NCSC-6, only around 70 have established their own senior citizens centers. Many others have yet to set up an office dedicated to senior citizens affairs. Ganzon stressed the importance of building relationships and partnerships with LGUs and encouraging legislative bodies to develop policies that support and sustain senior citizens programs.

In a related effort, the Senior Citizen Community Care Center in Cabatuan town, Iloilo, was the first to be launched in Western Visayas in September 2024.
