Negros occidental: Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has announced that the provincial government will provide financial aid to the family of Leah Mosquera, a Negrense caregiver who succumbed to severe injuries following an Iranian missile attack in Israel on June 15. The tragic incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in conflict zones.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mosquera's passing was confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Sunday, after communication from her sister, who is also working in Israel as an OFW. The DFA has expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and has been actively involved in efforts to assist them during this difficult time.
Governor Lacson expressed his sympathy in an interview, stating, "We extend our condolences to the family of Leah Mosquera. It's unfortunate. Reports said that she really fought for her life, but I guess the injury that she sustained was too much for her." His sentiments reflect the community's grief over the loss of a fellow Negrense in such tragic circumstances.
Karen Dinsay, who heads the Public Employment Service Office, disclosed that the province will grant PHP190,000 in financial assistance to Mosquera's family through the OFW Help Desk. This gesture mirrors the support provided to the family of Loreta Alacre, another Negrense caregiver from Cadiz City, who was killed during the Hamas attacks in Israel in October 2023.
Mosquera, a resident of Barangay Guintorilan, San Enrique town, was among the casualties when a missile hit a residential building in Rehovot, located south of Tel Aviv. The incident underscores the perils faced by many OFWs working in volatile regions.
The Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv is actively coordinating with local authorities to ensure the swift repatriation of Mosquera's remains, providing a measure of solace to her grieving family.
