Hinigaran: The municipality of Hinigaran in Negros Occidental is showcasing its best homegrown products in the newly opened One Town, One Product (OTOP) store, the first local government unit or LGU-led hub in the province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the OTOP hub was launched in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Monday. It also houses the Negosyo Center and a training center for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the southern Negros town. DTI-Negros Occidental Director Lynna Joy Cardinal emphasized that the establishment of OTOP stores is a core part of the government's commitment to boost local livelihoods and build a stronger economy. Cardinal stated, "This project is a promise for MSMEs that their hard work and creativity will be seen, celebrated, and rewarded."
The Hinigaran OTOP hub offers products such as furniture and furnishings made from lampirong (windowpane oyster) shells, which are abundant in the area, along with fashion accessories and food products. Vice Mayor Nadie Arceo affirmed the municipal government's commitment to supporting enterprise development through various programs for MSMEs. Arceo, during his tenure as mayor, issued an executive order to support and institutionalize OTOP in the municipality, in compliance with Republic Act 11960, or the OTOP Philippines Act.
OTOP Philippines is a flagship government program that supports MSMEs through tailored government interventions to promote inclusive local economic growth. Section 7 of the act mandates that products must align with culture, community resources, connection with locals, creativity, and competitive advantage.
Additionally, the cities of Kabankalan and Sipalay are set to launch their OTOP stores on Sept. 11 and 12, respectively. In Bacolod City, there are two OTOP hubs managed by local producer groups: the Association of Negros Producers Showroom on South Capitol Road and the OTOP Lifestyle inside Ayala Malls Capitol Central.
