Bacolod: The Negros Occidental provincial government will start operating its own disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) training center here within the year as part of the initiatives to boost the province's readiness against natural disasters and calamities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson announced the opening of the Negros Occidental DRRM Training Center during the 37th inaugural session of the Provincial Board at the Capitol Social Hall. He emphasized that this initiative is a vital step in fostering a culture of preparedness and enhancing the province's capacity to save lives.
The Negros Occidental Operations Center, managed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), is strategically located at the Panaad Park and Stadium compound in Barangay Mansilingan. The province's Emergency 911 center provides round-the-clock services, supported by 24 ambulance units distributed across various local government units.
Governor Lacson highlighted the enhancements made in logistics, asset prepositioning for different seasons, and the expansion of communication capabilities across all cities and municipalities. He credited the PDRRMO for its significant role in strengthening the resilience of the Negrenses, especially in response to challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, Typhoon Odette, and recent volcanic activities.
Through these concerted efforts, Negros Occidental has achieved the 'Beyond Compliant' distinction under the Gawad Kalasag Seal for Excellence in DRRM and Humanitarian Assistance for the first time. The provincial government has also focused on installing early warning systems, conducting over 90 DRRM training sessions, and acquiring essential search and rescue equipment to bolster the One Negros Response system.
Additionally, the province's efforts have been recognized at the regional level for outstanding performance in institutionalizing DRRM for Health and for innovative implementation strategies.
