Manila: The Negros Oriental Bamboo Industry Development Council (NOBIDC) has orchestrated a series of activities to commemorate Philippine Bamboo Month this September, in collaboration with the private sector and government agencies, announced Jade Krystle Bato, spokesperson of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
According to Philippines News Agency, the centerpiece of the celebration is a bamboo planting activity scheduled for World Bamboo Day on September 18 in Tanjay City. On the same day, NOBIDC member Kawayan Collective Agricultural Cooperative, based in Dauin, Negros Oriental, will inaugurate a franchise outlet in Tanjay City. This establishment, known for its bamboo products and modular homes, is expanding its reach beyond its first location in Tarlac.
Another highlight of the month is the introduction of a course by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) on engineered bamboo, bamboo processing, and bamboo production. This offering will be unique for its National Certificate II (NC II) accreditation from TESDA. Preparations for this course include a meeting between the Bayawan City government and TESDA on September 15 to establish an assessment center.
Jade Krystle Bato emphasized the potential of the bamboo industry in the province, noting that the National Greening Program has led to extensive bamboo planting along river banks. She highlighted the possibilities for expanding the industry beyond its traditional role as 'poor man's lumber' to a variety of innovative products and applications.
Additional activities planned include hands-on Bamboo Construction Workshops at Kawayan Collective and discussions on a Bamboo Housing Project for former rebels in Basay town. The DTI serves as the secretariat of the council, with bamboo as one of its priority industry clusters alongside coffee and cacao. The agency is also working with local government units (LGUs) to establish their bamboo councils to bolster and promote the local industry.
