Negros Oriental Bridge Crucial for Evacuation Remains Accessible Amid Storm

Canlaon: The local government unit (LGU) of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental has assured the accessibility of Linothangan Bridge, a crucial route for evacuation and emergencies, even as Severe Tropical Storm Opong impacts the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Seth Bariga, the information officer of the city's Emergency Operations Center (EOC), confirmed that Linothangan Bridge remains passable to motorcycles and lightweight four-wheel vehicles. Bariga explained that motorcycles can use the bridge directly, while other vehicles have access to a nearby detour constructed as a temporary measure during ongoing repairs.

Bariga noted that the repair work includes a cement pour that occurred on September 17, requiring approximately a month to cure fully. Linothangan Bridge serves as a vital evacuation corridor to nearby Negros Occidental, especially during potential eruptions of Mt. Kanlaon and other emergencies.

The city faced additional challenges as heavy rains from the southwest monsoon, intensified by Severe Tropical Storm Opong, caused the river to flood the detour road in the morning. Canlaon City is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1, prompting heightened vigilance.

Furthermore, the city government is actively monitoring the risk of mud or lahar flows from Mt. Kanlaon and potential landslides due to continuous rain in the mountainous area. In response, Bariga stated that the city has strategically prepositioned trucks and other vehicles to facilitate immediate evacuation of residents if necessary.
