Negros Oriental Cardiologists Advocate for Athlete Heart Health Screening

Negros oriental: Cardiologists in Negros Oriental are supporting a national initiative advocating for cardiovascular screening among athletes as they officially organized themselves into a group promoting the slogan, 'Heart-Healthy NegOr.' According to Philippines News Agency, the newly-created Philippine Heart Association (PHA) Negros Oriental-Dumaguete Chapter was launched with its officers sworn into office. Dr. Brian Joseph Calinawagan, president of the local PHA, disclosed various activities planned for the province, in addition to the national initiative for athletes, during a press conference before the induction event. These activities include regular free hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, especially for athletes, as Dumaguete is known for its runners, cyclists, divers, and swimmers. Dr. Calinawagan emphasized that 'The Heart-Healthy NegOr is our overall program for a CPR-ready Dumaguete City.' Other activities include educational campaigns, implementation of PHA programs, and other preventive cardiology projects focused on fitness and exercise. The chapter plans to engage in lectures, forums, and establish partnerships with various training institutions, schools, and universities as part of the Heart-Healthy NegOr campaign. Furthermore, the chapter aims to conduct discussions and foster an environment of proactive participation among athletes engaged in competitive sports. It also supports the PHA's call for a national framework for athlete cardiovascular screening to prevent sudden cardiac death. PHA national president Dr. Walid Amil stated their goal to reach numerous areas across the Philippines, bringing their existing advocacies to grassroots communities. The PHA's priority programs for 2025 to 2026 include ensuring one cardiologist for every city, the PhilCardio Registry-a PHA-initiated national research of global impact, global training for cardiology fellows in-training, and CPR-ready barangays. Dr. Amil led the induction of officers, board of directors, and advisers of the PHA Negros Oriental-Dumaguete chapter.
