Negros Oriental Intensifies Rabies Vaccination Drive Amid Rising Animal Cases

Negros oriental: The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Oriental reported a rise in rabies cases in animals this year compared to the previous year.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jaymar Vilos, the PVO information officer, stated that from January to August this year, 16 out of 24 animal head samples tested positive for rabies. In contrast, the PVO recorded only 10 positive cases in 2024. Vilos emphasized the importance of availing free anti-rabies vaccinations offered by the provincial government to curb the rising incidence. The PVO is also distributing vaccines to local government units (LGUs).

Vilos noted that this year's rabies cases involved dogs, with head samples submitted by LGUs for examination. Although some cats were tested, they were found negative for the virus. The increase in cases is largely due to unmonitored strays. The PVO encourages pet owners to vaccinate their animals to prevent further spread.

The PVO is working with the Department of Health and the Integrated Provincial Health Office to compile a report on rabid animal bite victims. Vilos clarified that the PVO's role is to identify rabies in animals, not report human fatalities, and noted that prompt medical care can prevent death in bitten individuals.
