‘Once in a Lifetime Opportunity’: PH Spiker on FIVB World Tourney

Manila: Alas Pilipinas is in potentially strong hands with the young guns providing energy and determination to step up for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of playing in the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship that starts Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

According to Philippines News Agency, Italian coach Angiolino Frigoni has placed his trust in younger players from the UAAP, including Michaelo 'Buds' Buddin, Jade Disquitado, Louie Ramirez, and Eco Adajar, as well as Josh Yba±ez, Leo Ordiales, and Peng Taguibolos, with Ramirez representing the NCAA as a two-time MVP from the University of Perpetual Help. This selection aims to showcase the promising future for Philippine volleyball.

Buddin, a native of Palawan who once dreamed of playing in Manila, feels that being part of the historic Alas Pilipinas batch is a monumental achievement after being a late call-up last year. He contributed to the Philippines' back-to-back bronze medals in the SEA V.League 2024 and earned accolades as a Best Outside Hitter.

Ramirez, at 25, has demonstrated versatility as both an outside and opposite hitter. He expresses pride in representing the NCAA and looks forward to potentially debuting at the world championship, particularly in the opening match against Tunisia following an exciting kick-off ceremony featuring K-Pop group BOYNEXTDOOR and Cebuana singer-songwriter Karencitta.

Disquitado, who joined the team during the 2023 Southeast Asian Games at 19, has been a vital energizer from the bench. For him, reaching this level is both unexpected and a source of pride. He hopes to inspire future volleyball players to strive toward similar achievements.

Adajar, a setter from La Salle, is tasked with orchestrating plays alongside Owa Retamar on the global stage. Despite the challenges, he feels supported by his teammates and the entire Philippine volleyball community, which boosts his confidence.

These dynamic Filipino players, though coming from different programs and often competing against each other, are unified in their commitment to the team. They are prepared to contribute whenever possible and are equally eager to support from the sidelines if needed.

Alas Pilipinas is set to face No. 23 Egypt on September 16 and will take on Asian powerhouse Iran on September 18. The final 14-player lineup will be announced following the preliminary inquiry on Thursday.
