Manila: Three fisherfolk associations in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands have been empowered with 62-foot fiber-reinforced plastic hardline fishing vessels, collectively valued at PHP34.5 million, from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) - Caraga Region. These modern boats, part of the Capacitating Municipal Fisherfolk Program, are intended to support offshore handline fishing operations and enhance the capacities of the association members, as announced by BFAR in a news release.

According to Philippines News Agency, Christopher Malinao, vice president of the Loreto Fisherfolk Association in Dinagat Islands, expressed that the project enables them to venture into the high seas and increase their catch. He emphasized that the new vessel offers greater safety compared to the small boats they used previously. Malinao conveyed gratitude to the government and BFAR for providing a larger and more reliable fishing boat.

Euleterio Rodrigo, chairperson of the San Pedro Agri Multipurpose Cooperative in Libjo, Dinagat Islands, highlighted the inclusivity of their group, which consists of fisherfolk, farmers, and women's organizations. He pointed out that previously, they relied on pamasol, an angling or hook-and-line fishing method with small boats. The new fishing vessel allows them to fish in high seas, catch more, and subsequently increase their income.

BFAR-13 indicated that these new vessels will also help in reducing operating costs. The agency stated that the intervention aims to strengthen the productivity of municipal fisherfolk by equipping them with modern fishing vessels capable of supporting offshore handline fishing operations.
