Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has been granted enhanced autonomy to determine the most effective teaching methodologies for students, following the passage of Republic Act (RA) 12322. This legislation requires regular curriculum assessments to ensure the basic education system remains pertinent and adaptive.
According to Philippines News Agency, the new law, which took effect after lapsing into law on August 2, 2026, was announced by Malaca±ang on Thursday. It amends the existing RA 10533, also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, by enabling DepEd to choose pedagogical approaches that best promote student mastery of knowledge and skills.
Section 1 of RA 12322 emphasizes the importance of allowing DepEd to select the teaching strategies it finds most effective, thereby removing the previous limitations set by specific standards and principles in curriculum development. This amendment equips DepEd to better address the changing educational landscape and integrate evidence-based teaching practices.
Furthermore, the legislation mandates a thorough review of the basic education curriculum every five years to ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of students. The law is set to be implemented 15 days following its publication in the Official Gazette or a widely circulated newspaper.
