New Siargao Congressman to Focus on Enhancing Tourist Safety and Airport Facilities

Surigao del Norte: New Siargao congressman Francisco Matugas, elected as the 1st District Representative, will prioritize measures aimed at ensuring the welfare of both local and foreign tourists visiting Siargao Island. Matugas is set to replace his son, Francisco Jose Matugas II, who was unsuccessful in the gubernatorial race during the May 12 elections.

According to Philippines News Agency, Matugas expressed his intention to collaborate with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to improve facilities at Siargao's Sayak Airport in Del Carmen town. He has already discussed these plans with DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, who recently visited Siargao. Matugas emphasized the need for a modular-type passenger terminal at Sayak Airport, which currently manages 18 to 19 flights per day. The proposed terminal would accommodate around 500 to 700 passengers, significantly enhancing capacity and passenger experience.

In addition to airport improvements, Matugas highlighted the popularity of motorcycle riding among foreign visitors along Siargao's circumferential road. This route provides access to tourist destinations beyond General Luna, the island's renowned surfing site. Matugas plans to secure funding for the installation of solar lights along the circumferential road to improve safety for visitors enjoying nighttime motorcycle rides.

Data from the Department of Tourism-Caraga Region indicated a 9.8 percent increase in tourist arrivals on the island from January to March 2025, compared to the same period last year. Tourist numbers rose from 102,439 to 112,510. Domestic visits increased to 77,202 from 72,251 in 2024, while foreign tourist arrivals climbed to 35,308 from 30,188 last year.
