Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday assured the public, especially residents of the city of Manila, that three of the four pumping stations in Barangay Sunog Apog in Tondo, are expected to be operational before the next rainy season to ensure the continuous flow of rainwater and alleviate flooding in the area.

According to Philippines News Agency, the assurance was given by DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon in line with the order of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to make the pumping stations in the village operational before the 2026 rainy season. The President's deadline was a response to a request from Manila Mayor Isko Moreno to ensure that at least three of the four pumps are operational before the next rainy season begins.

The DPWH chief inspected Barangay Sunog Apog on Tuesday with Moreno and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes. Dizon highlighted the need for a complete solution to flooding, moving away from what he described as past "band-aid" approaches. The project is being undertaken with the assistance of Prime Infra and local governments to ensure long-term effectiveness.

Alongside the pumping stations' operation, the government is implementing the Oplan Kontra Baha program, which involves cleaning esteros, canals, rivers, and other waterways to mitigate flooding. Mayor Moreno noted that flood mitigation works at the Sunog Apog Pumping Station are progressing after eight years of inactivity. The facility had remained nonfunctional since its construction, despite the area's frequent flooding.

Moreno expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating that after a thorough technical review, a permanent solution has been identified. He conveyed optimism to the residents of Sunog Apog, assuring them that a proper solution is now in place. The target is to have at least three or all four pumps operational by the rainy season in May and June.
