New Year Shootout in Zamboanga Results in Two Suspects Dead, Officer Injured

ZAMBOANGA CITY: A New Year's Eve shootout in the west coast village of Barangay Ayala resulted in the deaths of two assailants and the wounding of a police officer, according to local authorities. The incident occurred in front of the parish church in Zone 1, where an attempt by two unidentified men to ambush an officer was thwarted.

According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Kimberly Molitas, director of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), reported that the confrontation involved Senior Master Sgt. Ryan Mariano, a member of the ZCPO Station 9-Special Drug Enforcement Team. The officer was on duty as part of a citywide initiative to enhance safety during New Year celebrations by curbing illegal firearms and firecrackers.

The shootout unfolded when the suspects, riding in tandem on a motorcycle, targeted Mariano. The encounter resulted in the immediate death of the motorcycle driver at the scene, while his companion succumbed to injuries at a hospital shortly after.

Police officials are currently working to identify the deceased suspects. Col. Molitas praised Sgt. Mariano for his bravery, stating that his actions demonstrated the commitment of law enforcement to protect the community, despite the inherent risks involved. She also commended the ZCPO personnel for their diligence and dedication to public safety.

In her statement, Col. Molitas expressed optimism for a more peaceful year ahead, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in maintaining community safety.
