Manila: The New Zealand government is set to open applications for its Manaaki scholarships starting February 1, as announced by the New Zealand Embassy in Manila on Wednesday. These scholarships offer nationals from Asia Pacific countries, including the Philippines, the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees in New Zealand, with studies commencing in early 2026.
According to Philippines News Agency, eligible applicants will receive comprehensive support through the scholarships. This includes full tuition, living expenses, an establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance, and round-trip airfare between the Philippines and New Zealand. Funded by the New Zealand International Development Cooperation Programme, these scholarships have been instrumental in empowering young leaders to instigate change in critical areas such as climate change, renewable energy, disaster risk management, and good governance.
In the 2024 cycle, a total of 16 Filipinos were awarded the scholarship and are scheduled to begin their studies in New Zealand in 2025. Catherine McIntosh, the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, emphasized the scholarships' role in empowering problem solvers and change-makers. She highlighted that scholars will not only receive a world-class education but also gain an authentic New Zealand experience and the tools necessary to contribute to the Philippines' future.
The online application portal for these scholarships will be open from 12 a.m. NZT on February 1, 2025, and will close at 12 p.m. NZT on February 28, 2025. The scholarships are available to eligible candidates from the public, private, and civil society sectors.
