NGCP Restores Key Transmission Services in Visayas Following Cebu Earthquake

Cebu: Key transmission services in the Visayas grid are now back to normal conditions after the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that jolted northern Cebu and several areas on Sept. 30. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has successfully completed major restoration works, ensuring the stability of the power supply in the affected regions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Compostela-Daanbantayan 230kV Line 1 was reenergized at around 2:18 a.m. on Oct. 7 and is now operating alongside the already restored Line 2. The Daanbantayan-Tabango 230kV Line 2, which includes the submarine cable linking Cebu and Leyte, was reenergized on Oct. 3. Restoration efforts are still ongoing for the Daanbantayan-Tabango 230kV Line 1, which remains on outage.

The NGCP clarified that these lines provide an N-1 contingency to the backbone transmission corridor that has already been restored, ensuring that power customers are not affected. The N-1 contingency refers to an event that causes a disruption in a component of the power grid, and the agency is actively working to maintain grid stability and operations in Visayas.

The NGCP has been working tirelessly to ensure the reliability of the transmission network in the aftermath of the earthquake. They have urged power consumers to coordinate with their respective distribution utilities and electric cooperatives for any localized power interruptions. The agency remains vigilant, with aftershocks still being recorded, and continues to monitor the situation closely.
