Manila: To protect Filipino onion growers, the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday assured no importation of red onions until next year. In an interview, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the country has an adequate supply of onions nationwide.

According to Philippines News Agency, with the current supply in stock, there is no need to import onions until March next year, specifically for red onions. Tiu Laurel emphasized this decision during a market inspection at New Las Pi±as City Public Market, stating that it would help maintain the profitability of local onion farmers.

However, for white onions, a potential importation is being considered, but only at a limited level. Tiu Laurel mentioned that there might be a shortage of white onions by November, which could necessitate a small and controlled importation, though the exact volume has yet to be determined.

The issuance of import clearances will also be restricted for a certain period to ensure the protection of local farmers. Tiu Laurel assured that the measures are aimed at safeguarding the interests of farmers in regions like Nueva Ecija and Mindoro by preventing any imports from affecting them until February.

Additionally, Tiu Laurel clarified that the current retail price adjustments in local markets are due to logistical challenges rather than supply shortages. As of Monday, the prices of both local red and white onions in Metro Manila range from PHP70 to PHP160 per kilogram. Imported red onions are priced at PHP95 per kilogram, whereas imported white onions range from PHP100 to PHP150 per kilogram.
