Northern mindanao: A series of building and infrastructure inspections in Northern Mindanao is underway following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the southwest part of the island region on Monday. Most local government units (LGUs) also issued class suspensions earlier, and some offices even closed as a precaution.
According to Philippines News Agency, Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao extended the suspension by two days in anticipation of aftershocks and the post-earthquake protocols to be implemented by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM) unit. Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy also suspended the classes while the CDRRM inspected the school and commercial buildings.
"After a thorough evaluation of school buildings and facilities and following the post-earthquake assessment team's recommendation, Mayor Uy has ordered the resumption of classes at all levels tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9," the city government here said in a statement. Meanwhile, the municipality of Tubod in Lanao del Norte sent an initial team of responders to augment search-and-recovery efforts in General Santos City.
The Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao also coordinated with the LGUs, Office of Civil Defense and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices for standby emergency responses.
