Tokyo: North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan from Wonsan in the eastern province of Kangwon at around 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the South Korean military.

According to Philippines News Agency, Japan's Defense Ministry reported that the projectile is believed to have fallen outside the country's exclusive economic zone, with no reports of damage to aircraft or ships. The missile traveled approximately 690 kilometers and reached a maximum altitude of around 90 kilometers. The South Korean military noted the missile traveled over 700 kilometers and is currently analyzing additional details.

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi addressed the media in Tokyo, stating, "North Korea's action threatens peace and safety in our country, region and the international community." Japan has lodged a strong protest with North Korea through diplomatic channels in Beijing.

The U.S. Pacific Command released a statement acknowledging the missile launch and confirmed ongoing consultations with allies and partners. The latest launch follows a previous short-range ballistic missile test by North Korea last Thursday and appears to be a response to an upcoming large-scale joint military exercise by U.S. and South Korean forces scheduled to commence Monday, potentially simulating a contingency on the Korean Peninsula.
