Northern Samar Launches P20/Kilo Rice Program for Low-Income Families

Catarman: The Northern Samar provincial government has initiated the 'Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!' program, aimed at providing affordable rice to low-income families throughout the province. This initiative commenced at the Capitol Gym in Catarman town, offering households the opportunity to purchase up to 10 kilograms of rice at a subsidized rate of PHP20 per kilo.

According to Philippines News Agency, the provincial government is urging public participation in this initiative, emphasizing the availability of 400 sacks of rice. The distribution operates on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring accessibility to those in need.

The program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Agriculture and the provincial government, facilitated through the local agriculture office. The national government, in conjunction with the Food Terminal Incorporated and local government units, provides the necessary subsidies allowing the National Food Authority to offer rice at the reduced price of PHP20 per kilo.

The restriction of 10 kilograms per household is implemented to maximize the number of families that can benefit from the program, ensuring wide-reaching impact across the community.
