Manila: Acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has mandated a comprehensive inquiry into the killing of Gerry Campos, a broadcaster-turned-municipal councilor in Surigao del Sur.

According to Philippines News Agency, this directive aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s order for prompt and thorough investigations in incidents involving public servants, journalists, and civilians, aiming to uphold the rule of law while safeguarding citizens' rights and safety.

Gerry Campos, who previously held the position of director at Radio Mindanao Network in Butuan City and managed Radyo Serbato, was elected to the Marihatag municipal council before his untimely death. He was fatally stabbed on Saturday near a gasoline station in Barangay Sta. Cruz. Although the 42-year-old suspect was apprehended the next day, Lt. Gen. Nartatez emphasized the necessity of establishing the motive to identify any additional perpetrators.

Lt. Gen. Nartatez stated, "The PNP condemns this attack. We assure the family and friends of Gerry Campos that we will look into this case to determine the motive and hold accountable those behind this senseless killing." He reiterated the PNP's dedication to protecting both residents and members of the press, highlighting that violence or any impunity against journalists will not be tolerated.

The acting chief urged the public to share any information that could aid authorities in the investigation, underscoring the critical role of community cooperation in crime-solving and maintaining peace and order.
