Laguna: A Japanese national allegedly linked to the notorious "Luffy" gang was arrested in an operation in Laguna province, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Tuesday. Sasaki Takashi, 43, was apprehended Monday in Savana Village, San Pablo City by BI agents in coordination with the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group and the local police.
According to Philippines News Agency, Takashi is a fugitive from justice wanted by the Japanese government for theft and fraud, targeting vulnerable individuals. Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado stated that Takashi's presence in the Philippines poses a risk to communities and undermines efforts to maintain security and order. The Tokyo Summary Court issued a warrant for his arrest in January 2023 for violations of Japan's Penal Code.
Reports from Japanese authorities indicated that Takashi and his accomplices stole automated teller machine cards and bank information from elderly victims by impersonating law enforcement or finance officials conducting investigations. Takashi's arrest highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in combating transnational crimes. Viado emphasized the need to strengthen partnerships with both local and international agencies to ensure the Philippines does not become a refuge for fugitives.
Investigations revealed that Takashi is a member of the notorious Japanese criminal syndicate reportedly operating telecom fraud and extortion schemes in the Philippines. The suspect will be transferred to the BI warden facility in Taguig City until his deportation.
